Solarpunk and Positive Futurism lead the revolt against dystopianism.

Solarpunk and Positive Futurism are terms for a relatively new genre that focuses our collective imagination on a future we love, instead of one we fear.

Solarpunk began as an offshoot of Steampunk, and is generally recognized as a sub-genre of sci-fi imagining vibrant future worlds replete with colorful garb, and solar-powered communities of the future. The term has since grown into a movement of people living eco-friendly lives today.

In Solarpunk: A Manifesto, Adam Flynn writes, “The great solutions of the 20th century began as fictional proposals, from the moon landing to Social Security. It’s time we returned to higher ambitions for what we can do as a society.”

Solarpunk is a revolt against the dystopian trend in sci-fi today. Dystopianism can be a catharsis of our collective fear, but it’s also catapulting us towards the future we fear. 1984? Been there. Maybe we are there. Where do we go from here?

That’s the answer visionary authors inspire us to imagine.

Positive Futurism is a sub-genre of Speculative Fiction, rather than sci-fi. It is anchored in the possible, not the future far far away. Jules Verne wrote speculative fiction, a lot of which has since come to pass!

Positive Futurism stories recognize the struggles ahead and are rooted in the idea that humanity comes together like never before during a crisis. It gives us a voice of reason in a world going a little insane, hope rising from the eye of a storm. Positive Futurism stories are inspiring and uplifting and give us characters who rise to the occasion and offer humanity hope for the future and hope in human nature to overcome any obstacle, even runaway climate change.

Solarpunk and Positive Futurism authors think big. They, we, see ourselves as part of the human species, not a nation or a race. Positive Futurism focuses on what the world can look like in the future, if we all rise to the occasion. The best of these stories inspire us today to make a difference now.

“Stories from the Future” Writing Contest

The “Stories from the Future” podcast was started as a way to give you a voice and a place to have your stories about the future be told and reach people.

We invite you to submit your stories to the writing contest. Winning entries will be read on the podcast, and included in upcoming solar punk speculative fiction anthologies published (paperback and kindle) by the non-profit parent company Green Effect Media.
